'1900 UTC' is 7 pm Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)
Why so complicated?
TigerGammon is an international server. That means that players
live all over the world. To meet for a match or tourney, you have to
agree on a point in time that is meaningful to both. To propose a time for a match
that is convenient for a friend, you have to know which timezone he is living in.
Many probably don't know in which timezone they are living or how this zone is denoted generally.
Pretty much known by all is the so called Coordinated Universal Time
UTC; some refer to that timezone as GMT, the
Greenwich Mean Time.
Timezone identifiers
To make it even more messy there are individual Daylight Saving Times in different countries.
This way you'll get two different names for almost all timezones and not in a common
pattern. So you have f.i. CET (Central European Time), and CEST (Central European Summer Time)
or CEDT (Central European Daylight Time).
Therefore it is a good idea not to use those abbreviations, but denote a timezone by a combination
of continent and capital city. Like you would say America/Detroit, for instance, to
identify your timezone, given that you live somewhere reasonably close to Detroit.
There is a long
list of valid timezones where you may pick your appropriate timezone.
Timezones on TigerGammon
TigerGammon supports timezones with its command time. In two examples you may see how to
display your time in, let's say New York City and of a friend in Switzerland; TigerGammons answers
are shown here in italic.
time EST↵
Monday, February 17 05:18:46 EST ( Mon Feb 17 10:18:46 2014 UTC )
time Europe/Zurich↵
Monday, February 17 11:18:45 CET ( Mon Feb 17 10:18:45 2014 UTC )
In both cases you see the desired time and the associated universal time in parentheses.
It is a good idea to set your own timezone in the TigerGammon settings like this
example for California shows:
set timezone America/Los_Angeles↵
save↵
This timezone is then used whenever there a times to be displayed or like when a matchfile
has to be saved. If you don't configure this setting the default setting is UTC.
Frequently used timezones
On TigerGammon you'll meet mainly players that live in these timezones listed here.
To keep it short there are no daylight saving time. These timezones can be used in TigerGammon
